Graduation Class from Wes-Del (for Athletes): 2002

Sport(s) Participated In both during and after high school:

Basketball, Cross Country, Track

Contributions to the field of athletics:

Jon was the first male athlete from Wes-Del to be offered a Division 1 athletic scholarship for basketball. Jon had verbally accepted IPFW Coach Doug Noll’s offer to recruit him for his first D1 team in Aug. 2001. Unfortunately, Jon died before he could sign. Playing college ball on an athletic scholarship was Jon’s dream. When running track, Jon anchored the 4×400 team.

List of Accomplishments, Awards and Recognitions both during and after high school:

Jon was posthumously named to the second and third teams All State by two of the state basketball publications. He was named All County.

All County

All Conference

Lettered freshman, sophomore, and junior years in basketball

Jon loved playing basketball. He was a member of the varsity team from the first game of his freshman year and soon became a starter. He was a selfless teammate which ironically was a criticism Coach Noll had since he thought Jon should have taken more shots. In three seasons, Jon had amassed 903 points. At Jon’s visitation, the sports writer from the Star Press told us he had been working on the article for when Jon hit 1000 points. Among the over 1400 paying respect to Jon were players from opposing teams, referees, coaches, and community members. A scholarship was established in Jon’s memory for Wes-Del student athletes who exemplify Jon’s character and love of his sport. Since 2002, nearly 50 students have received the Jon Hunter Memorial Scholarship through the Community Foundation.
